When I Look at Mexico, I see America’s Future

Drug violence is out of control in Mexico. Mexican President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006 and declared war on the cartels. In just short of five years, more than 28,000 people have died. This year alone, more than 7,000 have died.

In recent months, the violence has taken a turn for the worse. The carnage has reached a level that has finally forced the U.S. liberal media to take notice. Here are a few news bites that show how bad the situation in Mexico has become:

• Twenty-seven suspected drug gang members were killed in a clash with troops near the U.S. border, Mexico’s army says, hours after the country’s president vowed to continue the fight against drug cartels.
• In Juarez, a car bomb was recently used to hit paramedics trying to save a life. Paramedic Nancy Paz Mares was hit by shrapnel. She said the person who did it “has no heart.”
• Juarez has become the murder capital of the world, with 2,600 dead last year. It is a city with a population not much larger than that of San Antonio. The death toll could be higher this year. It’s on track to hit 3,000. San Antonio had 96 murders in 2009.
• Mexican authorities found 72 bodies inside a ranch near San Fernando, Tamaulipas, in northeastern Mexico. The victims were trying to reach the United States, and they would have been killed for refusing to work for the drug group “Los Zetas.”
• In Mexico City, police announced that 3,200 federal police officers had been fired after failing drug and lie detector tests, or having assets that could not be accounted for. A separate group of 465 officers is due to be fired in Juarez. In total, 10 percent of the Mexican law enforcement personal have been dismissed.
• In July, a car bomb was detonated in the border town of Cuidad Juarez, killing three people. It was the first known use of a car bomb against authorities and marks a troubling new level of violence in the country’s brutal drug war.

One news report noted that Mexico’s drug war has many similarities to the violent conflicts of the Middle East. Even though there doesn’t seem to be any connection to the drug cartel and Islamic terrorists, I think there is one. The violence is similar because demonic forces are guiding both groups.

The Western Hemisphere has had outbreaks of violence in the past. In the 1980s, several Central American nations had military death squads that killed people who disagreed with the government. In the 1990s, the Columbia drug war was a hotbed of violence.

The Mexican violence stands out because it is so evil in nature. In the Columbia drug war, the fighting was mostly between two military groups–the Columbian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). In Mexico, people are being killed over the most trivial matters.

In Genesis, God sent a global flood to wipe out humanity because the earth was filled with violence. The Lord’s need for drastic action would seem to imply that violence spreads like a disease, and nothing short of mass sterilization will work at stemming the plague.

The infection of pure-evil violence began in the Middle East and has now spread to our southern neighbor. Unless our moral immune system kicks in, the violence will continue to spread to other areas of the globe, and perhaps even here in the U.S. The only thing missing is a catalyst. Since our financial system seems doomed to collapse, I can easily see how we could come to resemble Mexico.

Jesus said the last days would be a time that would see a repeat of the days of Noah and Sodom. In both cases, sin and violence had reached their zenith. These were also times when God spared two groups of people from destruction. Jesus used them as examples because He will soon spare a third group–the church–from violence when He raptures all believers to heaven.

“And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed” (Luke 17:26-31).
