More tension around the peace process.   Last week I posted an article that the PA was planning to ask the UN to proclaim the PA an independent state outside the peace process, this looks like the response to both sides.  It is amazing to watch all of this unfold and for little Israel to be the central focus of the world.  Especially with everything else going on, just think about it…

UN Message on Negotiations was a Veiled Warning to PA

A diplomatic United Nations warning, interpreted by pro-Arab media as aimed at Israel, also was a veiled message to the Palestinian Authority not to try to ask the international body to declare the PA as a country.

Assistant Secretary-General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco told the UN Security Council on Monday that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon believes “if the door to peace closes it will be very hard to open.”  However Taranco added—in statement that was not as widely quoted—that “there is no alternative to a negotiated settlement resulting in the creation of an independent and viable” PA state.

Bishops Discuss Middle East Threats to Christians

A two-week conference of bishops is underway in the Vatican to discuss the future of the dwindling Middle East’s Muslim-threatened Christian communities.

Pope Benedict XVI has convened Catholic bishops from all over the Middle East to discuss and debate how to save the minority Christian communities in the area. Issues under discussion include strife in Iraq, the Israeli-Arab conflict, radical Islam, the divisions among the region’s many Christian churches, and the economic situation.

While Christian demographics in the Middle East vary from country to country, the overall trend is the same: down. Christians currently account for some 5 percent of the region’s population, compared with some 20 percent 100 years ago. In Turkey, for instance, where the Christian minority numbered 20 percent a century ago, it today is one-hundredth of that, or 0.2 percent of the total population.

The Almighty, Liberals and Liberty

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | In a recent column, New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow wrote: “It’s sometimes easy to lose sight of just how anomalous our (America’s) religiosity is in the world. A Gallup report issued on Tuesday underscored just how out of line we are.”

Given Blow’s leftwing politics and his point was that all rich countries except for the United States are secular and that all poor countries are religious, he was obviously not making this point in order to celebrate America’s “anomalous” religiosity.

He should have. America’s anomalous religiosity is very much worth celebrating — not because it leads to affluence, but because it is indispensible to liberty. Had Blow made a liberty chart rather than an affluence chart, he might have noted that the freest country in the world — for 234 years — the United States of America, has also been the most G0d-centered.

Yes, I know that the Islamic world has also been G0d-based and that it has not been free. But that is because Allah is not regarded as the source of liberty, as the America’s Judeo-Christian G0d has been, but as the object of submission (“Islam” means “submission”).

French retirement protests take violent turn

PARIS – Masked youths clashed with police and set fires in cities across France on Tuesday as protests against a proposed hike in the retirement age took an increasingly radical turn. Hundreds of flights were canceled, long lines formed at gas stations and train service in many regions was cut in half.

President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged to crack down on “troublemakers” and guarantee public order, raising the possibility of more confrontations with young rioters after a week of disruptive but largely nonviolent demonstrations.

Sarkozy also vowed to ensure that fuel was available to everyone. Some 4,000 gas stations were out of gas Tuesday afternoon, the environment minister said. The prime minister said oil companies agreed to pool gasoline stocks to try to get the dry gas stations filled again.

Prime Minister Francois Fillon said, “The government will continue to dislodge protesters blocking the fuel depots. … No one has the right to take hostage an entire country, its economy and its jobs.”

The protesters are trying to prevent the French parliament from approving a bill that would raise the retirement age from 60 to 62 to help prevent the pension system from going bankrupt. Many workers feel the change would be a dangerous step in eroding France’s social benefits — which include long vacations, contracts that make it hard for employers to lay off workers and a state-subsidized health care system — in favor of “American-style capitalism.”

Flashback to 1870 as Cotton Hits Peak

Cotton prices touched their highest level since Reconstruction on Friday, as a string of bad harvests and demand from China spark worries of a global shortfall.

Stocks end mixed as financials stumbled for a second-straight day while a big jump in Google shares lead technology stocks and the Nasdaq higher. Plus, cotton hit a 140-year high. Mike Reid wraps up all of the day’s market action.

The sudden surge in prices—cotton has risen up to 56% in three months—has alarmed manufacturers and retailers, who worry they may be forced to pass on higher costs to recession-weary consumers.

Amazing pictures, and an amazing feat!  Think of the technology advancements it takes to be able to drill that far through a mountain and create the equipment that allows that to be done.  We are living in extraordinary times…

23 years in the making for just one hour off the travel time: Drilling on world’s longest tunnel stretching 35.4 miles under the Alps is completed

The drilling of the longest railway tunnel in the world has been completed, 14 years after it began.

The last few yards of rock were removed earlier today, opening the 35.4-mile Gotthard Base link through the Swiss Alps which will allow trains to transport goods and passengers to and from Italy – and shave an hour off journey times.

The £624m tunnel through the Gotthard massif, including the 8,200ft Piz Vatgira, is part of a larger project to remove heavy goods vehicles from roads in a bid to preserve Switzerland’s pristine Alpine landscape.

Swiss voters, who are paying more than £800 each to fund the project, approved its construction in a series of referendums almost 20 years ago and will have to wait several more before it is ready for rail traffic.

Conservationists say the money was worth spending even if after 23 years of construction it will only take one hour off the length of a journey.

‘The Swiss love their mountains,’ said Thomas Brolli, a campaigner with the group Alpen-Initiative.

Currency tensions persist as markets await Fed

(Reuters) – Recriminations over currencies reverberated worldwide on Friday ahead of a speech by Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke, whose loose policies are blamed by China and others for destabilizing capital flows.

Beijing kept up the heat on the United States, saying Washington should not make China a scapegoat for its own problems by constantly pressing for a swifter rise in the yuan.

Speaking hours before the U.S. Treasury Department is due to deliver its semi-annual assessment of whether China manipulates its currency, Commerce Ministry spokesman Yao Jian said it was not fair to criticize Beijing’s exchange rate policy simply by pointing to China’s trade surplus.

“Other countries have no right to comment on what is a reasonable level for a country’s trade surplus,” Yao told a monthly news conference.

Sniping over what exchange rates are appropriate to put the world economy back on course is intensifying ahead of a pair meetings of the Group of 20 leading economies in South Korea.

Bernanke Makes Case for Further Fed Moves to Boost Economy

Bernanke made a case for new Fed action to boost growth, saying inflation is running below the bank’s objective of 2% and that the economy is growing too slowly to reduce unemployment. David Wessel, Evan Newmark and Paul Vigna discuss.

“There would appear—all else being equal—to be a case for further action,” Mr. Bernanke said in prepared remarks for a conference on monetary policy at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Afghanistan hit by disfiguring tropical disease

The Afghan capital, Kabul, has been hit by a disfiguring tropical skin disease, the World Health Organization says.

The WHO warned that the disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis, threatens the health of 13 million Afghans, especially women and girls.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease transmitted through the bites of certain species of sand-fly.

It can lead to severe scarring, often on the face, and regularly goes undiagnosed and untreated.

”The number of new reported cases in Kabul dramatically rose from the estimated yearly figure of 17,000 to 65,000 in 2009, mainly among women and children,” said WHO representative to Afghanistan Peter Graaff.

”This number is likely to be the tip of the iceberg as cases are grossly underreported.”

Several other major cities such as Herat, Kandahar and Mazar-e Sharif are also centres of leishmaniasis.

Social stigma

Leishmaniasis has exploded in crowded neighbourhoods of Afghanistan and spread to hundreds of thousands of people.

”I had the disease – and didn’t go to a doctor – but it healed itself after a year,” said Abdul Ghaffar, 12, in Kabul.

”I am fine now, but I am worried about the scar.”

No Cost of Living Hike to Social Security Next Year

WASHINGTON — More than 58 million retirees and disabled Americans will get no increase in Social Security benefits next year, the second year in a row without a raise.

The Social Security Administration said Friday inflation has been too low since the last increase in 2009 to warrant an increase for 2011. The announcement marks only the second year without an increase since automatic adjustments for inflation were adopted in 1975. The first year was this year.

The cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs, are automatically set each year by an inflation measure that was adopted by Congress back in the 1970s.

To make up for the lack of a COLA, the House will vote in November — after congressional elections — on a bill to provide $250 payments to Social Security recipients, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. But even if Pelosi can get the House to pass the proposal, it faces opposition in the Senate.

US Consumer Sentiment Dips to Weakest Level Since July

U.S. consumer sentiment unexpectedly dipped in early October to its weakest level since July, with buying plans on the decline, a survey released Friday showed.

Also, consumers’ assessments of government economic policies fell to the lowest level since U.S. President Barack Obama took office, it showed.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan’s preliminary October reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment came in at 67.9, down from 68.2 in September and below the 69.0 median forecast among economists polled by Reuters.

The survey’s barometer of current economic conditions was at the lowest level since November 2009. The index was at 73 in early October, compared with 79.6 in September and 79.8 forecast by analysts.

Consumer spending typically accounts for about two-thirds of U.S. economic activity and is considered critical to the recovery. It’s especially watched in the months ahead of the U.S. holidays, a key period for retailers.

The Glorious Grace of God Part 1

By Todd Baker

The grace of God is a fundamental aspect of salvation and is the sole means by which man’s redemption is accomplished. The renowned classic hymn “Amazing Grace” is the best known hymn of the Christian Church and has been universally heard by both Christian and non-Christian alike. But what exactly is so amazing about this grace?

Like many theological words, the word and use of “grace” is one of the several common words Christians frequently use in their witness and testimony to the unbeliever without really defining and explaining what it exactly means. Grace has routinely been defined as the undeserved favor of God shown to man. A more precise definition would be to add an additional feature to that by stating: The single source for this grace flows from God the Father through the incarnation of God the Son made effectual by the work of God the Holy Spirit in the heart of the one who believes. It is by this free and unmerited grace that sinners are forgiven, justified, and declared in right standing before God as objects of His

COULD GOD REALLY LOVE ME?

By Grant Phillips

Are you convinced that a Holy God could never love you? Many are.

To the contrary, some people ride high on the waves of egotism, either believing there is no God or they do not need God in their lives. These unfortunate souls seem to think their works, their education, their position in the community and/or church, and various other excuses make them a gift to God. This is not only sad, but tragic, because they can never know God until they see themselves as God sees them.

Going back to the other end of the spectrum, others are just the opposite. They are so down on themselves, they think God could never care about them. However, these dear folks are closer to being helped spiritually, than the proud mentioned earlier. Why? Because they see themselves as God sees us all, apart from His Son Jesus. “As it is written, (more…)

BEIJING | Thu Oct 14, 2010 6:39am EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) – The United States fired the first shot in the currency war and the rest of the world must be on guard for its deliberate strategy to devalue the dollar, a Chinese economist said in an official newspaper on Thursday.

In a front-page commentary in the overseas edition of the People’s Daily, Li Xiangyang described the United States as the conflict’s “first maker of tomb figures,” a Chinese idiom that means someone who creates a bad precedent.

Li, head of the Asia department at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a top government think tank, said continued intervention in currency markets by developed economies would deal a blow to global economic recovery.

Chinese leaders have warned before that loose monetary policies in the United States pose a serious challenge for emerging markets, but rarely in such strident language, a window onto the rising anger in Beijing.

“The dollar’s depreciation may appear to be market-driven. In reality, it is a depreciation colored by very strong, deliberate actions,” Li said in the paper, which serves as the chief mouthpiece of China’s ruling Communist Party.

Fed Mulls Raising Inflation Expectations to Boost Economy

Federal Reserve policy makers may want Americans to expect inflation to accelerate in the future so they spend more of their money now.

Central bankers, seeking ways to boost flagging growth after lowering interest rates almost to zero and buying $1.7 trillion of securities, are weighing strategies for raising inflation expectations as well as expanding the balance sheet by purchasing Treasuries, according to minutes of the Fed’s Sept. 21 meeting released yesterday.

Some Fed officials are concerned that expectations of lower inflation will become self-fulfilling, damping demand by increasing borrowing costs in real terms, the minutes said. By encouraging Americans to believe prices will start rising at a faster pace, the Fed would reduce inflation-adjusted interest rates and stimulate the economy. Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said in 2003 that Japan could beat deflation by using a “publicly announced, gradually rising price-level target.”

Peres to Assad: Choose Between Golan and Iran

The strategic Golan Heights is negotiable, but Israel will not hand it over to Syria while it continues its ties with Iran and its proxy Hizbullah terror group, President Shimon Peres told visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday.

“Assad must make a strategic choice. There is no way that Assad will get territorial concessions from Israel while at the same time maintaining ties with Hizbullah and Iran in a package deal,” said Peres.

We have all drifted or been led astray from the basics of God’s word.  Do you know the ten commandments?  List them off in you head right now?  I got quite a few but it took a while.  We all need to get back to the basics of founding our lives on God’s word.  Christ warned of the church falling away in the last days.  Satan is doing his best to quicken the fall.  Do we still teach the 10 commandments in Sunday school?  We must re-found ourselves on the rock…

Commandments need more church focus

The Family Research Council (FRC) recently decided to make the Ten Commandment its focus in order to stress the necessity of God’s law in society. Kenyn Cureton, vice president for church ministries at the FRC, explains that a USA Today poll shows that 60 percent of Americans do not know five of the Ten Commandments.

More confirmation of Syria and Hezbollah has scud rockets and is training to use them.  Scuds are so critical because they can reach all of Israel and are generally more accurate…tensions are rising as we slide toward God’s prophesied Psalm 83 War.

Google Earth Photos Reveal Syrian Scuds

JERUSALEM (Oct. 12) — Israeli defense experts were still sounding alarms this week over Google Earth images made public Friday by the Israeli daily Haaretz. The satellite photos, taken March 22, show Scud missiles ready for deployment at a Syrian base at Adra, where earlier reports suggest Syria is training Hezbollah militants in the use of missiles that threaten large parts of Israel.

The photos show five 11-meter-long Scuds at the Adra base. Three are on trucks in a car park. Two others are in a training area where 20 to 25 people can be made out along with about 20 vehicles. One of the two missiles appears to be mounted on a mobile launcher; another is on the ground.

Earlier reports have suggested that the Adra base, located in a deep valley surrounded by 400-meter mountains, has concrete tunnels leading deep underground where the missiles are apparently stored in protected silos.

France Crippled by Strike Over Retirement Age

NICE, France (Oct. 12) — Hundreds of thousands of French protesters took to the streets today as part of the fourth nationwide, 24-hour strike in little more than a month over President Nicolas Sarkozy’s plan to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62.

The showdown over Sarkozy’s pension reforms, which resulted in a bigger turnout today than for the past three protests, may intensify even further if the unions follow through with threats for open-ended, rolling strikes.

Steel workers from the nearby Fos-sur-Mer ArcelorMittal plant join a protest march in Marseille, southern France, Tuesday.

More Oklahoma earthquakes, this time as large as 5.1.  They are getting larger and more frequent on a newly discovered fault line.

Remember what Christ warned us…

Matthew 24:3-8 (NIV) – “As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”  4Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Prophecy Sign: Earthquakes: After I put up my post for Oct. 13, 2010, I received this news from a Brother in the Lord. Read my post from earlier today and you will see the importance of this news.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — One of the strongest earthquakes on record in Oklahoma rattled parts of five states Wednesday and left two people with minor injuries.

The earthquake struck at 9:06 a.m. about six miles east of Norman in Cleveland County, sharply shaking portions of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the magnitude to be 4.3, but research seismologist Austin Holland said the Oklahoma Geological Survey measured it at 5.1. The higher figure would make Wednesday’s temblor the second-strongest here since records began.

Gallup Finds U.S. Unemployment at 10.1% in September

PRINCETON, NJ — Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, increased to 10.1% in September — up sharply from 9.3% in August and 8.9% in July. Much of this increase came during the second half of the month — the unemployment rate was 9.4% in mid-September — and therefore is unlikely to be picked up in the government’s unemployment report on Friday.

Nearly 93 percent of the 70 respondents, including economists, fund managers and traders, believe the Fed will boost the size of its portfolio, up from 69 percent in the survey two weeks ago.

Of those who expect the Fed to move, 86 percent look for an announcement in November, up from 38 percent in the last survey.

Market participants forecast that the Fed will announce plans to purchase $500 billion in assets at the conclusion of the upcoming meeting, the first time the question has been asked.
